Tattoo Aftercare, Sun and Sea: Healing Well in Mallorca

How long to stay out of the sea and the pool, how to handle the heat and how to keep your tattoo's colours bright under the Mallorca sun.

Tattoo aftercare: sun and sea are the two big challenges for anyone getting tattooed in Mallorca. The island makes it tempting to head straight for the beach, but a fresh tattoo needs a few weeks of protection before it's ready for salt water and strong sunshine.

Below you'll find what to do in the first days, how long to stay out of the water, how to deal with the heat and how to protect your tattoo once it has healed. These are the same guidelines we give clients at Ink & Blood Tattoo Parlour in Palma, alongside the written instructions everyone takes home.

Why sun, salt water and chlorine are a problem for a new tattoo

For the first weeks, a new tattoo is a healing wound. The needle has opened the skin thousands of times, and it needs time to close and settle the ink. Anything that irritates it or brings in bacteria during that period can slow healing, cause an infection or leave the colour patchy.

  • Sea water carries salt, sand and bacteria that irritate open skin.
  • Pool water is treated with chlorine, which dries out healing skin, and shared pools bring their own bacteria.
  • Saunas and steam rooms soften the skin and any scabbing too early.
  • Direct sun can burn healing skin and fade the ink before it has settled.

The first days: cleaning and cream

Follow your artist's instructions first, because they depend on the piece and on how it was covered after the session. In general, the first days look like this:

  • Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, using clean hands.
  • Pat it dry with a clean paper towel rather than a shared bath towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of the cream the studio recommends. Too much cream keeps the skin wet and slows healing.
  • Wear loose, clean clothing over the area.

Showering is fine from the start. What you want to avoid is soaking the tattoo, so no long baths and no swimming.

How long to stay out of the sea and the pool

The surface of a tattoo usually heals in around two to four weeks, but this varies. Small fineline pieces often settle faster than large, heavily saturated areas, and placement makes a difference too: skin that moves or rubs a lot, such as the inside of the elbow or a foot in sandals, tends to take longer.

The rule is simple. Until the tattoo has stopped peeling, there are no scabs left and the skin no longer looks shiny, stay out of the sea, the pool, the jacuzzi and the sauna. If you're unsure, send a photo to the studio on WhatsApp and we'll tell you how it looks.

Tattoo aftercare in sun and sea: beach days while healing

If you're staying in Mallorca while the tattoo heals, you don't have to stay indoors. You just need to change the way you spend the day:

  • Keep the tattoo in the shade and cover it with loose, light clothing. Sunscreen is not a substitute while the skin is still healing.
  • Go to the beach early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sun is less intense.
  • Don't lie on the tattooed area on sand or a sun lounger.
  • Drink plenty of water; heat and sweat make the skin feel tighter and itchier.
  • Rinse off sweat with lukewarm water and pat the area dry.

Itching, peeling and what is normal

Around the end of the first week, most tattoos start to itch and peel, a bit like skin after sunburn. This is part of normal healing. Don't scratch or pick at the flakes, as this can pull ink out and leave lighter patches. Tapping the area lightly or applying a thin layer of cream usually helps.

Some redness and swelling in the first couple of days is common. If the redness spreads, the area becomes hotter or more painful after the first days, or you feel unwell, see a doctor. For anything health-related, if in doubt, ask your doctor.

After healing: protecting the colours from the Mallorca sun

Once the skin has fully healed, you can swim and sunbathe as normal. From then on, the sun is the main reason tattoos fade: UV light breaks down pigment over time, especially lighter colours and fine detail.

Use a high-SPF sunscreen on the tattoo every time it's exposed, and reapply after swimming. This matters most for colour work such as watercolour and for delicate fineline tattoos, where thin lines can blur if they burn again and again. Good tattoo aftercare in sun and sea pays off: a well-protected piece will look much closer to the day it was done, years later.

Planning a tattoo around your holiday

If you're visiting, the easiest way to combine a tattoo with a beach holiday is to get it at the end of the trip, so you enjoy the sea first and heal at home. Our article on getting a tattoo on holiday in Mallorca covers the planning in more detail.

If you live on the island, winter and early spring are good times for bigger projects, when you're less likely to spend every weekend on the beach.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask us most.

How long after a tattoo can I swim in the sea?

Wait until the tattoo has healed: no scabs, no peeling and no shiny skin. For the surface that usually takes about two to four weeks, but it varies with the size, the placement and your skin. If you're unsure, send the studio a photo and ask before you go in.

Can I put sunscreen on a new tattoo?

Not while it's still healing. Sunscreen on open or peeling skin can irritate it, so keep the tattoo covered with loose clothing and in the shade instead. Once it has fully healed, use a high-SPF sunscreen every time it's exposed to protect the colours.

Is it OK to shower with a fresh tattoo?

Yes. Short showers with lukewarm water are fine from the start. Wash the tattoo gently with clean hands and a mild soap, pat it dry with a clean paper towel and apply a thin layer of the cream the studio recommends. Avoid baths and long soaks until it has healed.
