Getting a Tattoo on Holiday in Mallorca: A Practical Guide

When to book, how to plan around your beach days and how to fly home with a fresh tattoo: a practical guide for visitors to Palma.

A tattoo on holiday in Mallorca is a souvenir that never ends up in a drawer. Every time you look at it, you're back on the island. The catch is that fresh tattoos and beach days don't get along, so a little planning makes all the difference.

This guide covers the practical side: when to book, how to fit the appointment into your trip, what to send the studio beforehand and how to travel home with a healing tattoo. It's based on what we see every summer at Ink & Blood Tattoo Parlour in the centre of Palma.

Why a tattoo on holiday in Mallorca needs a plan

A new tattoo is an open wound for the first days and needs time to close. Until it has healed, you should keep it out of the sea, the pool, saunas and direct sun. Salt water, chlorine and bacteria can irritate the skin and affect healing, and strong sun can damage fresh ink.

The surface usually takes around two to four weeks to heal, although this varies from person to person and depends on the size and placement of the piece. On an island where most days revolve around the beach, that matters. The good news is that it's easy to work around if you get the timing right.

Get tattooed at the end of your trip, not the start

The simplest rule we give visitors: book your session for the last days of your holiday. That way you enjoy the sea and the sun first and do the healing at home, where it's easier to keep the tattoo clean and covered.

  • You don't spend half your holiday avoiding the water.
  • You don't need to hide the tattoo from the sun on every outing.
  • The skin you're getting tattooed isn't sunburnt or dried out from the beach.
  • You fly home with clear aftercare instructions and heal in your normal routine.

If you're staying longer, or you live on the island, you can of course plan it whenever suits you. Just leave a few weeks free of swimming afterwards. Our guide to tattoo aftercare in sun and sea explains what to do during those weeks.

Book ahead, especially in summer

Palma is busy from late spring to early autumn, and so is the studio. Walk-ins are sometimes possible for small pieces, but if you're here for a week or two, the safest option is to message us on WhatsApp (+34 690 104 035) before you arrive or as soon as you land. We're open Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30 to 19:00, and on Mondays by appointment only.

To give you a quote and find a date quickly, it helps if your first message includes:

  • A short description of your idea
  • Reference images, if you have them
  • Where on the body you'd like it
  • An approximate size in centimetres
  • The dates you're in Mallorca

The quote is free and comes with no obligation, so you can ask before you commit to anything.

Choosing a design and the right artist

Every piece at Ink & Blood is a custom design, drawn for you from your idea rather than copied from a sheet. Many visitors want something linked to the island: a lemon branch, an olive tree, a wave, a swallow, the outline of the coastline. Others use the trip as the moment to finally get the tattoo they've been thinking about for years.

Each of our four artists has their own strengths, so it's worth matching your idea to the right person:

  • Floriana works in fineline and blackwork, a good fit for delicate small and medium designs.
  • Danielo specialises in Japanese, neo-traditional and blackwork, with bold lines and strong compositions.
  • Miquel focuses on realism, watercolour and cover ups.
  • Carolina works in blackwork, dotwork and black & grey, ideal for portraits, animals and ornamental pieces.

You can see their work on the artists page and browse more examples in our gallery. If you're not sure which style suits your idea, tell us and we'll suggest an artist.

What happens on the day

Before starting, the artist goes through the design with you, checks the placement on your skin and adjusts the stencil until you're happy with it. Needles and consumables are single-use and opened in front of you. At the end you get advice on looking after the tattoo and written aftercare instructions to take home.

A few things make the session easier: eat properly beforehand, drink water, skip alcohol the night before and wear clothes that give easy access to the area. If you have a medical condition, take regular medication or simply aren't sure whether a tattoo is a good idea for you right now, ask your doctor before booking.

Size, sessions and realistic expectations for a short stay

The price of a tattoo depends on its size, placement, level of detail and the number of sessions it needs, which is why we quote each piece individually. For a short holiday, think about what can be finished in one visit. A fineline design on the forearm or a small blackwork piece usually fits into a single session. A large realistic sleeve or a full Japanese back piece needs several sessions spread over time, which works better if you live here or come back to Mallorca regularly.

If you have a big project in mind, we can plan it in stages and start the first part during this trip.

Travelling home with a fresh tattoo

Flying with a new tattoo is not a problem as long as you keep it clean. Wear loose clothing over it so nothing rubs, wash your hands before touching it and pack the cream the studio recommends in your hand luggage (check the size limit for liquids). Try not to lean on the tattooed area for hours during the flight.

Once you're home, follow the instructions you were given until it's fully healed. After that, high-SPF sunscreen will keep the colours looking good for your next summer in Mallorca.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what people ask us most.

Can I go in the sea after getting a tattoo in Mallorca?

Not until it has healed. Salt water, sand and bacteria can irritate a fresh tattoo and affect how it heals. The surface usually needs about two to four weeks, depending on your skin and the piece. That's why we recommend booking your session at the end of your holiday rather than the start.

Do you accept walk-ins?

Sometimes, for small designs and when an artist has a free slot. In summer the diary fills up quickly, so it's much safer to message us on WhatsApp before your trip with your idea, the placement, an approximate size and your dates. We'll reply with a free quote and the days available.

How much does a holiday tattoo cost?

It depends on size, placement, detail and whether it needs more than one session, so there's no fixed price list. Send us your idea and a reference image on WhatsApp and we'll give you a free quote with no obligation, so you know where you stand before you decide.
